Carlos Queiroz is back at the helm of the Ghana national team, returning less than two months after stepping down following the Black Stars’ elimination in the World Cup round of 32.
The Ghana Football Association announced late Wednesday that the 73‑year‑old Portuguese coach had agreed to a new contract after fresh talks with the federation and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The GFA said Queiroz’s reinstatement reflects confidence in his “extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars,” adding that those qualities “position him strongly to lead the team into this new chapter.”
Queiroz, who has previously coached Portugal, Colombia, Iran, Egypt and Real Madrid, left his post after Ghana’s narrow 1‑0 loss to Colombia in the first knockout round of the World Cup.
At the time, he said he felt no “complete sporting satisfaction” but believed the team had restored “respect and credibility to the Black Stars.”
Ghana was on a four‑game losing streak when Queiroz was first appointed in April to replace Otto Addo, who was fired after a poor run of results.
Under Queiroz, the team managed to steady itself during the World Cup group stage, earning a draw against England and advancing as one of the best third‑place finishers despite a loss to Croatia.
With Queiroz’s experience, including multiple World Cup appearances and a reputation for defensive organization and tactical discipline, Ghana hopes to regain momentum ahead of upcoming continental and international competitions.
The GFA did not disclose details of the new contract, but officials emphasized that the agreement followed constructive discussions with both Queiroz and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation
