Ghana has announced a reversal of visa restriction imposed on it by the United States.
In July this year, the US announced changes to its non-immigrant visa policy for four African countries namely Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ethiopia, cutting down the duration of and conditions for travel.
The US Department of State at the time said nearly all non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of the four countries will now be single-entry and valid for only three months.
In the latest development, Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said months of high-level diplomatic negotiations has led to a “successful outcome.”
“Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” Ablakwa said in a social media post, describing the reversal as a “big win for Ghana.”
US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker communicated the US’ decision to Ghana at a bilateral meeting.
