Senegal has long demanded its former colonial master take responsibility, officially apologise and properly investigate the massacre that took place in Thiaroye.

Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye will on Thursday receive an official report on the killing of dozens of African troops by French forces during the World War II.

The report is coming nearly six months later than its original due date.

Hundreds of African soldiers were killed by the French army in 1944 at the Thiaroye military camp, on the outskirts of Dakar, for having demanded their pay.

France has already admitted to the “massacre” in a public letter; a move Senegal views as a significant step in the process of rehabilitating the honor and dignity of victims.

In a press release, the Senegalese Government Information Office stated that the paper would be submitted to President Fay on Thursday.

“A product of rigorous research, documentation and focus, the white paper aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the massacre, honor the memory of the victims, and promote shared historical recognition among the nations concerned,” the press release said.

The commission of inquiry was established late 2024 after five Members of Parliament tabled a request for its creation to bring finality to the Thiaroye massacre.

Calls for the investigation intensified during the 80th anniversary commemoration of the massacre.
