At least 29 people have been confirmed dead and several others in critical condition after a boat capsized in north-central Nigeria.

The boat which carried more than 100 passengers was headed to Dugga in Niger State but capsized along the Borgu local government area after hitting a tree stump.

Preliminary investigations by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency reveal the boat carried more people than it should.

Officials told local media that emergency personnel and local divers are still searching for victims as they fear casualties may increase.
