The youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former President, Robert Mugabe has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Bellarmine Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates Court in Johannesburg initially on a single charge of attempted murder after they were arrested on Thursday February 19 following the shooting of a gardener in their residence.
According to Police sources, the incident occurred around 10pm South Africa Standard Time on Thursday, while the diplomatic policing unit was patrolling the area.
South African police say while the circumstances of the shooting remain sketchy, cartridges used in the shooting have been found at the Hyde Park residence although the firearm believed to have been used has still not been found.
Despite the additional charges on the two, the prosecution said investigations continue to find the firearm used and ascertain its legality.
Meanwhile, lawyer for the Mugabes’ Sinenhlanhla Mnguni says the legal team awaits the finalization of police investigations to determine their next action.
“As the prosecution stated, the investigation from the SAPS (South African Police Service) is still ongoing, so we’re still waiting for those to be finalized so that we can in fact consult with our clients, take instructions and then take the necessary to deal with our client‘s matter,” he told journalists after court proceedings today.
The case has been adjourned until Tuesday March 3 when the two accused are expected to make a formal bail application.
