Malawi’s president, Lazarus Chakwera has conceded to his main opponent and former president, Peter Mutharika in the 2025 general elections.
Addressing the nation on Wednesday, ahead of an official announcement by the country’s electoral commission, Chakwera said his concession is an acknowledgment of the will of the people and respect for the country’s constitution.
“This outcome is a reflection of your collective will to have a change of government. And so it is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution,” he said.
Results tallied so far indicate Malawi’s former president, Mutharika leads the polls with more than 65% of votes, more than the desired 50% +1 votes.
While admitting his disappointment in the results, Chakwera said he will ensure a “peaceful transfer of power”.
“I have already instructed my team to begin preparations to render the incoming administration any support needed to ensure a seamless process that safeguards our nation’s peace, order, institutions, public service and constitutionalism,” he added.
