Madagascar’s army says it has taken over power following weeks of political turmoil and anti-government demonstrations.

A leader of the country’s CAPSAT army unit, Colonel Michael Randrianirina in a national radio address said “we have taken the power.”

The development comes barely a day after President Andry Rajoelina said there was an attempt to “take over power illegally.”

Rajoelina on Tuesday dissolved the country’s National Assembly in a bid to avoid a forceful takeover, however the military said lawmakers have voted to impeach the President.

The power seizure is similar to events in 2009 which brought Andry Rajoelina to power.

Rajoelina has currently left Madagascar saying he fears for his life.

In a post on Facebook reacting to the power seizure announcement, Andry Rajoelina said “too many lies being spread to confuse the public. Don’t let yourself be defeated by terrorists, because light must overcome darkness.”
