Rwanda is set to make history as it welcomes the world to Kigali for the Road World Championships, starting Sunday, September 21.
This marks the first time the international cycling event will be held on African soil since the tournament was founded in 1900
The championships, organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), bring together the world’s top cyclists to compete for the coveted rainbow jerseys.
The annual event determines the world’s cyclist champions across various categories divided into junior, Under-23, and elite.
Rwanda won the bid to host the tournament in 2021, beating competitor Morocco.
The opening ceremony will kick off on Sunday in Kigali, setting the stage for the Elite Individual Time Trials in both the women and men’s categories with Rwanda’s Xaveline Nirere being among the first to compete.
Over the next eight days, the championship will feature 13 events, including time trials and road races. The competition will conclude on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
According to the UCI, hosting the tournament in Rwanda is not only a historic achievement but also offers Africa’s cyclists am opportunity to showcase their craft on a global stage.
