Kenya has adjusted cash rewards upwards for athletes who will win medals at 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Gold medal winners will now “earn” Sh3million, up from Sh750,000 representing a quadruple increment. Silver medalists who previously earned Sh500,000 will now earn Sh2million, while bronze medalists are getting Sh1million, up from Sh350,000.

Kenyan president, William Ruto in an announcement at the country’s state house said daily allowances for players have also been increased.

“We have also raised their daily allowances from $60 to $200, a clear demonstration of our commitment to valuing their sacrifice and celebrating their victories.”

The increment in the Athletes’ rewards scheme, according to the president, is to sustain a “proud tradition” of resilience, discipline and talent among Kenya’s athletes.

Critics have however described the increment as a “unilateral decision without parliamentary approval,” urging transparency and accountability in the disbursement of public funds.

The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo kick off on Saturday, September 13 and end on September 25.

More than 2000 athletes from 200 countries are heading to Tokyo to participate in one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
