Chadian National Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment to extend the presidential term from five years to seven years.

The amendment also allows the president to serve an unlimited number of times, while pushing term limit for Members of Parliament up from four years to six years.

This comes barely a year after the country’s parliament approved a new constitution that allows president, President Mahamat Idriss Déby to stay in office until 2033.

President of the National Assembly, Ali Kolotou Tchaïmi in a media address after the vote said the amendment was approved after an overwhelming majority of 171 MPs voted in support of the change.

The Senate is expected to vote on October 13 ahead of a presidential assent.

Chad joins Mali which also granted coup leader Assimi Goita a five-year presidential mandate, renewable “as many times as necessary” and without requiring an election.
