Junta-led Burkina Faso government has refused proposals by the United States to accept deportees under America’s third-country deportations.
The move makes Burkina Faso the second African country to officially reject the deal after Nigeria.
Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore in an address on Thursday said the proposal is “indecent” and “runs completely contrary to the principle of dignity.”
The US deportation program has been marked by controversy, with countries like Ghana facing significant local and international criticism over its handling of deportees sent by the US.
In Eswatini, rights groups have filed legal challenges to prevent the country from accepting US deportees, signaling dissatisfaction among citizens in these African nations which are accepting US deportees.
Burkina Faso’s rejection has led to a suspension of regular services for most visas for people living in Burkina Faso.
Jean-Marie Traore questions whether the move is to put pressure or blackmail the government into accepting the deportation deal.
