Former Kenya Justice Minister to run for presidency in 2027

While Kenyans use "wantam" to push for a "one-term" presidency for non-performing presidents, Karua believes a single term is enough for any administration.

Former Minister of Justice under Mwai Kibaki’s presidency, Martha Karua says she will be running for the highest political seat in Kenya in 2027.

Karua, a leading Kenyan lawyer and former parliamentarian says however that she will only seek one term if elected as president, arguing that five years is enough to lay a good foundation for the Kenyan economy.

“I believe that in five years, it’s possible to lay a foundation. Nobody will ever finish the job of making Kenya prosperous. You lay a foundation and you wait for the next team to come and further,” she said during her party’s delegates conference.

Karua made headlines in May this year after she accused the Tanzanian government of deporting her and preventing her from attending an ongoing treason trial against a Tanzanian opposition leader, Tundu Lissu.

Karua, who leads the opposition Peoples Liberation Party (PLP), says her agenda is to demystify power and the “one-term” fear among Kenyan politicians.

“People get to power and they refuse to leave power. Martha Karua, yours truly, is seeking a single term; one term,” she stated.
