Ghana has agreed with the United States to accept migrants of West African nationality under America’s third country deportations.

14 deportees have already entered the country through the special arrangement, Ghana’s president John Mahama revealed on Wednesday.

“We were approached by the US to accept third party nationals who were being removed from the US. And we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come into the country,” he told Ghanaian media.

Several of the deportees, according to John Mahama are Nigerians and have since been sent back to Nigeria on their request.

The country is currently in talks with Gambian authorities to facilitate the return of a Gambian national who was among the deportees.

Ghana becomes the fifth African country to accept US deportees after Eswatini, South Sudan, Rwanda and Uganda.

Nigeria remains the only African nation to officially reject the deportees, saying “we already have over 230 million people.”
