Four individuals have been killed in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo after insurgents attacked a key Mozambique port town near a $20-billion TotalEnergies liquefied natural gas project.

The four comprise two civilians who are reported to have been beheaded and two soldiers shot by the insurgents.

The insurgents linked to the Islamic State group, clashed with Rwandan troops deployed to the area for reinforcement.

According to Associated Press, a local military official said four people were killed. “Mozambican and Rwandan forces responded immediately and they withdrew,” he said, condition of anonymity.

There has since not been any comment from Mozambican and Rwandan authorities.

Today’s attack adds to a series of insurgent attacks in Mozambique in recent weeks. It also comes at a time when several countries across the continent are facing rising insecurity from armed groups.
