The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has activated a new alert for Ebola outbreak in the country’s southern Kasai province.

The latest case, identified in a 34-year-old pregnant woman, brings suspected cases to 28 with 15 deaths. Health officials said samples tested revealed the country is battling the Zaire strain of Ebola.

This comes barely six months after the country’s eastern neighbor, Uganda, declared an end of the Ebola disease outbreak, less than three months after the virus was confirmed in the capital Kampala.

DRC’s Health Minister, Roger Kamba addressing the press in Kinshasa noted the suspected figures remain provisional as investigations continue.

The DRC has battled more than 15 Ebola outbreaks with the latest in 2022 and the deadliest recorded between 2018-2020. It killed more than 2,000 people.

Currently, Congo, with support from international agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), is increasing disease surveillance, treatment and infection prevention.
